Zhibing Hu, 56, Regents Professor of physics, died July 16 in Houston. He was born November 8, 1955 in Wuhan, China to Xingshou and Guifen (Luo) Hu. He was married to Guonan Wang in July 1983-in China
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. July 21 at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust. Services will be at 3 p.m. July 22 at Southmont Baptist Church, 2801 Pennsylvania Drive Denton, TX
Hu's recent research included findings that could lead to better design and manufacturing of glass. The research, in conjunction with a team from Harvard and Columbia universities, was published in the journal Nature.
He also worked with a student in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science who was a regional finalist for the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Hu's son, Peter, also a TAMS student, was the 2009 regional winner in the National Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.
He received a bachelor of science in engineering physics from Tsinghua University, Beijing, and a master's degree and doctorate in physics from McMaster University. Hu completed post-doctoral studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Hu joined UNT in 1990. He received grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, Army Research Office, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Alcon Laboratories, plus UNT faculty grants. His papers were published in Science, Physical Review Letters, Macromolecules and the Journal of Chemical Physics.
He was a member of the American Physical Society and Sigma Xi.
Survivors include wife, Guonan, two children, Peter Hu and Emily Hu, mother Guifen Luo, and brother Xiaojian Hu
