Obituary

William Roy Williamson, Jr., 93, of Coppell, Texas, beloved husband and father, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 12, 2010. He was born to William Roy and Lena May Hurst Williamson on July 24, 1916, in Missouri. His family moved to El Paso, Texas where he attended high school and then the Texas School of Mines (now UT El Paso) until his studies were cut short by the Great Depression and WWII. While at Fort Benning, Georgia, he met Mary Martin when they sang together in the choir at the First Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia. As an Ambulance Platoon Leader in the Army Medical Corps, he deployed to Europe with the 7th Armored Division, sailing from New York on D-Day, and engaged in combat operations in France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany, and performed occupation duty in Germany as a Captain. After corresponding with Mary during the war, he returned to El Paso where they were married on April 4, 1946. They immediately moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico where Bill joined Montgomery Agency, eventually becoming its President. He was well known in Carlsbad's business community for his hard work and integrity, and he served on the boards of the Community Concert Association, the Carlsbad Foundation, and the Carlsbad Board of Realtors. He served selflessly in church leadership positions in Carlsbad for almost 40 years, using his talents to help found Blodgett Street Baptist Church, construct an addition to Carlsbad Bible Church, teach Sunday School, and lead music worship in his strong baritone voice. He loved gardening, especially growing flowers from seed, and he made vegetable gardening a family enterprise to teach his children the value and dignity of hard work. He defined his character in his ability to provide for and protect his family and was always restrained and firm in family leadership. Above all, he loved the Word of God and through his personal Bible study and constant prayer, he taught his family to love the Bible. He was preceded in going to be with his Lord by his sisters Marian and Betty and brother Joe, and in December 2007, by Mary, his wife of 61 years. He is survived by children Bill (and Cathy) Williamson, Mary (and Duke) Clark, and John (and Alicia) Williamson; five grandchildren—David (and Leah), Paul (and Megan), Douglas (and Lisa), Jeffrey (and Jennifer), and Christine; six great grandchildren--Elijah, Joshua, Mary Carol, William, Mary Elena, and Robert; and Mary's cousin Dorothy Jackson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Carlsbad Community Foundation, Inc. (116 S Canyon St, Carlsbad, NM 88220) or Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 2pm at the Coppell Bible Fellowship Church, 751 W. Sandy Lake Road - Coppell - Texas - 75019 - 972.304.8195.
