Obituary

Tommie Louise Beckwith peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Tommie was born on November 22, 1934 to Jeptha and Abbie Whorton in Wink, Texas. She considered Corinth, Texas home, but always felt strongly connected to her roots in Lubbock, Texas. She graduated from Tahoka High School in 1952, and she kept a close bond with her classmates throughout her life. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Masters in Educational Psychology from Texas Tech University and was an enthusiastic and proud Red Raider. She always had her "Guns Up".

While attending Texas Technological College (Texas Tech University), Tommie joined Sans Souci. In 1953, the administration welcomed national Greek organizations, and — with a 25-year history as a campus leader — Sans Souci became Gamma Phi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta making Tommie one of the founding members. She met Robert "Bobby" Dean Beckwith at a Phi Delta Theta and Kappa Alpha Theta mixer. They began dating and enjoying all Texas Tech had to offer. She especially loved attending the football games with Bobby because he was a Saddle Tramp, and she had a front row seat. They married on August 26, 1954 at First United Methodist Church in Tahoka, TX.

She is best known for her faith and her love for her family. Her passion was for her five children, Bryon Beckwith of Denver, CO, Karon Bybee of Krum, TX, Brad Beckwith of McKinney, TX, Andy Beckwith of McKinney, TX, and Kristi Keller of Corinth, TX, and all of their activities, triumphs, and achievements. She supported her children with all her strength, tenderness, devotion, and spirit. She taught her family the meaning of compassion, provided encouragement, and loved unconditionally. Her wonderful sense of humor and her ability to make those laugh will be greatly missed.

She began working as a secretary in the Animal Science Department at Texas Tech University eventually transferring as a clerk to the Financial Aid Department, where she remained throughout her career. In 2000, she retired from Texas Tech after 30+ years of service where she advanced to the Associate Director position of Financial Aid. She worked diligently and fervently to help as many students pursue their dreams. Texas Tech Top Techsan Award honors staff members who display hard work, dedication and genuine Red Raider enthusiasm. In 1986, Tommie was awarded the Top Techsan award. In addition to her position at Texas Tech, she served in leadership positions for several professional organizations; among these were FASFA and President of TASFA.

She attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Denton, TX and Valley Creek Church in Flower Mound, TX. She was extremely devoted to the Word of God and lived by 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but power and love and self-control and Psalm 56:3-4 "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." She prayed continuously for her family, friends and those in need, and was involved in leading numerous Bible studies. She enjoyed reading Mary Higgins Clark and Karen Kingsbury novels among others. She had a love for music and learned to play the accordion as a child and continued throughout her life. This passion continued into high school where she played clarinet in the Tahoka High School band and was a majorette for marching band. She loved to watch her kids play soccer, and in order to become more involved with family, she learned to play and joined an adult soccer team. She was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, public service organization partner and auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, where she provided comfort in times of disaster, well-being of the community in times of crisis, and promoted aviation and related fields through aerospace education and CAP cadet program. She was the most generous and giving woman that did all she could for others. She baked cookies for the Texas Tech Band for bus trips to out-of-town football games. She followed all of the Texas Tech sporting events and had season tickets to the football games. Her love for Texas Tech started our family legacy and close ties to "Wreck 'Em Tech".

She is preceded in death by her parents Jeptha & Abbie Whorton. She is survived by her brother, James Whorton; five children, 11 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2023 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home, 705 N.
