Obituary

Sylvia Mae Koleber, 76, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 17, 2016 in the comfort of her home in Denton, TX. She was born on May 1, 1940 in Mitchell, Nebraska to Rueben and Rosie (Stricker) Derr. Sylvia graduated from Mitchell High School in 1958. She married Kenneth Eugene Koleber on February 15th 1959 in Mitchell Nebraska.
At the age of 10, she began playing the piano, a love which continued to bless many throughout her life. She gave piano lessons for many years. In high school, Sylvia sang in Madrigal, Triple Trio, sang with several other vocal groups and competed in state piano and vocal competitions. She served as congregational organist for over 60 years. She served many positions both stake and ward within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and is known and remembered for her talent at the organ during services. Sylvia studied music theory at Mountain View College.
Sylvia loved gardening, sewing, cooking, being outdoors, and Polka dancing with her husband Ken. She worked in the banking industry for many years and recently retired from 25+ years of employment at Denton Sports and Physical Therapy. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In view of the many illnesses and challenges which she overcame in her lifetime she is and will always be known to her family as "The World's Smallest Giant".
She is survived by her husband of 57 years Ken, four children, Gail (Tony) Lansford, Greg (Carmen), Mary, Michael (Angela); five grandchildren, Tiffany (Mike) Wheeler, Taylor, Ashley, Ava and Olivia; 2 great grandchildren; Brandon and Avery Wheeler. Sister Janice Derr Koleber and brother Rueben Allen Derr and his wife Kathy. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Gloria Elquest.
Family, friends and others whose lives Sylvia touched are invited to the memorial service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 3000 Old North Road, Denton TX at 10 am Thursday, September 22, 2016. A private family burial service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society.
