Obituary

Having endured the pain of pancreatic cancer with authentic gratitude, unflinching honesty, and faithful love for more than a year, Steven William Fox, 69, was sung into the arms of Jesus by his family on Friday, October 6th, as his weary body breathed its last.

Steve was born on August 4, 1954, in Osaka, Japan, to Col. William Innis Fox and Mrs. Roberta Keaton Fox. He moved several times with his family in his childhood, including to Germany, West Point, NY, and Fairfax County, VA. He came into adulthood with a deep love for Jesus and dedication in everything he set out to accomplish.

Steven Fox attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he studied chemical engineering.  Steve served as Georgia Tech's Student Body President and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1976.

After graduation, he began his career as a Chemical Engineer with BASF in Baton Rouge, LA, where he met a beautiful young woman at church named Sherry Mundell.  They were married in 1978.  His love, respect, admiration, and gratitude for Sherry would deepen year after year and would be eclipsed in his life only by his love for Jesus.

Steve's engineering career took him, Sherry, and their four children from Baton Rouge to Basel, Switzerland, Beaumont, TX, and Heidelberg, Germany before returning them to Baton Rouge in 2002. He and Sherry became members of The Chapel on the Campus and served wholeheartedly in a variety of capacities, including as an elder and Sunday school teacher. After years of leading young married Sunday school classes and mentoring young men, Steve felt led to begin night classes at LSU, working toward a master's degree in counseling. His clients and his work as a marriage counselor became one of the great energizing passions of his life.

Steve made another leap of faith when he and Sherry decided to leave their close community and beloved church to move to Denton, TX, to be closer to three of their kids and many grandkids.  He often spoke of the kindness of God in surrounding him with his family during this difficult season of illness. Steve's family will be forever grateful for the exceptional care and compassion he received from the doctors, nurses, and techs at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.

To know Steve Fox was to be overwhelmed by his passion, captivated by his intentionality and comforted by his presence. If you interacted with Steve for any length of time, you probably experienced one of his famous probing questions that demonstrated his sincere interest in you and his determination to break through shallow pleasantries.  Steve lived and loved with uncommon intensity and urgency.

Steve is survived by the love of his life, Sherry; daughters and sons-in-law Melanie and Josh Langston, Lauren and Barak Yaryan, and Allyson and Josh Pitre; son and daughter-in-law Tyler and Madie Fox; eleven grandchildren Emery, Claire, and Charlotte Langston, Malachi, Isaac, and Selah Yaryan, Gideon, Keaton, and Sandra Pitre, and Penelope and Jack Fox; brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Carol Fox and Norman and Karen Fox; sister-in-law Debbie and husband Skip, and brother-in-law Jeff and wife Lynne.  He is preceded in death by his father Bill Fox and his mother Roberta Fox.

There will be a small memorial service for family and friends at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home in Denton, TX, at 11am on Wednesday, October 11.  The service will be preceded by a wake at 10am and followed by a graveside burial service at Roselawn Memorial Park.  There will be a Celebration of Life in Baton Rouge, LA, on Friday, October 13, at 10:30am at the Chapel on the Campus with a reception to follow.
