Stephen Whitson Plunkett, 70, longtime pastor of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, died Monday, January 18, 2021, at his home in Denton.
Steve was born on November 27, 1950, in Fort Smith, AR to Julia Doris Plunkett and Arthur Plunkett, Jr. He attended Austin College, the University of Texas at El Paso, and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He was married to Margaret Carlyle Currie on November 17, 1979, in Austin. He served congregations in Rusk, TX, and Paducah, KY, before serving as pastor of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for twenty-five years. In the last years of his career, Steve served as interim pastor for First Presbyterian Church, Greenwich, CT; and Southminster Presbyterian Church of Centerville, OH. Steve authored two books: This We Believe: Eight Truths Presbyterians Affirm ; and Faith and Politics in a World Gone Awry .
Steve was active in Theater from an early age. He studied Theater in college and graduate school, and he acted and directed frequently in community theater.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Currie Plunkett of New York, NY; his daughter, Julia Alison Plunkett McStravick of Denton; brother, Phillip Plunkett of Fort Smith, AR; grandchildren, Faris Carlisle Plunkett of New York, NY; Smith Augustus Plunkett of New York, NY; Margaret Rose McStravick of Denton; and Duncan Currie McStravick of Denton.
