Obituary

Shirley Joanne Gunn
Shirley Gunn, 76, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Denton Presbyterian Hospital.

She was born April 17, 1935 in Hedley, Texas to Leo and Ida (Bell) Holland and grew up in Sunray Texas.

In March of 1951, at only 15, she was working at the movie theatre in Sunray where she met "the best looking guy" she'd ever seen. To get his attention, she would go into the balcony and dump popcorn on his head. She succeeded, because after dating only 5 months, they were married in Clayton, New Mexico. She became Mrs. Norris Gunn on September 8, 1951.

They went on to live in Dalhart, Plainview, Austin, Brownfield, and retired together to live at Lake Brownwood in 1997. Through 60 years of marriage, good times and tough alike, they were best friends. They worked together, traveled together, and laughed together often.

Shirley was a member of the Methodist Church wherever they lived and sang in the choir at many of them. She was an avid reader, loved to square dance, crochet, and play board and card games. They loved camping and frequently included their family in their travels.

In her own words, her most important recollections all revolved around her family – the births of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, their weddings and the times that she was fortunate enough to spend with them.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband and best friend Norris; 2 daughters, Tulane Hix and husband Jerry, Gay Strategier and husband Phil; 2 sons, Gil Gunn and wife Melinda, Toby Gunn and wife Christine; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 4 sisters.

She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held in Denton at Good Samaritan Village at 2:00 PM on Friday December 16, 2011.
