Obituary

Sandra Catherine Dillabough Mossman

October 27, 1943 - June 18, 2023

Sandra (Sandy) Catherine Mossman was beloved by her husband, Steve; her birth children, Danette, Kathleen, Aaron, Kevin, and Christopher, her children-in-law, and her fifteen grandchildren.  She had eight great-grandchildren who will grow up hearing stories about a compassionate woman who loved Jesus and her family and lived a testimony of God's protection, provision, and purpose. She was also loved by many other people she "adopted" along the way.
Sandy had a gift of song, which she used from the time she was six years old until she was nearly 80.  She loved hymns and spent her adult life wanting "Just a Closer Walk" with her Savior and knowing that "It Is Well" with her soul because "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."  With a new voice now, if there's a choir in Heaven that's where she is likely to be.
Sandy lived nearly 80 years, but 77 of those were "bonus" years.  When she was 3 years old, Sandy was orphaned in a terrible auto accident and suffered what today would be called a traumatic brain injury.  Medical care being what it was in 1946, she was not expected to survive.  In fact, they were so sure of it that when they buried her parents, they made preparations to bury her with them.  What followed was a childhood that did little to care for the broken heart of an orphan girl.
Not many people knew this about her, not just because she didn't talk about it much, but because it would be hard to imagine that someone with that start in life could turn into a person who loved other people as much as she did.   She had every reason to be bitter and spiteful, but instead, she spent her life pouring love into others.
She loved people who said horrible things about her.  She loved people who took advantage of her. She stuck around in ugly situations she probably should have left, all because she saw an opportunity to love people.  This is simply who she was.  And, she would be the first to tell you that her capacity to love came because she learned to love from her Heavenly Father, Who stepped in, as promised, to be "a father to the fatherless."
While her childhood was lonely and troubled, her faith became her source of direction and strength.  Her earthly story is perfectly summarized by one of her daughters:
"Sandy, the little orphan who never really felt safe… who translated that into a gift for making others feel loved… is now an orphan no more."  She has joined her parents, her daughter, Danette, and two of her grandchildren, in His presence, completely whole.
We are so thankful for those bonus years — She poured out love on her family and a multitude of people literally around the world.  What a legacy for "the poor little orphan girl from Canada" who wasn't expected to see her fourth birthday…
