Obituary

The family of Sandra Jan Huckaby is saddened to share the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on September 26, 2025.  She was 90 years old.

Jan was born in San Angelo, Texas on September 24, 1935 to Karl and Katherine Parish.  Jan and her older sister, Karlene, spent most of their childhood in San Angelo then the family moved to Houston, TX.  It was there, while attending and graduating from St. Agnes, an all-girls Catholic high school, that she met the love of her life, Richard Huckaby, who attended St. Thomas an all-boys Catholic school.

Jan went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Richard, while he attended the University of Houston.  After receiving his BS in Civil Engineering, Richard joined the Marine Corps as an officer and together they spent the next 69 years traveling the world and raising their children, Steven Hoyle Huckaby and Sandra K. Huckaby-Hanna.  During Richard's years of military service, Jan was an active member of the Officer's Wives Club.

After his retirement from USMC, they settled in Lubbock, TX, where Jan became involved as a docent at the Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech University, leading tours of vintage ranching buildings.  Once Richard received his MPA, they moved to Denton, TX for his next career as City Manager of Corinth.  While in Denton, Jan volunteered at Elm Fork Education, of University of North Texas, where Jan spent many years teaching elementary students about the environment.

Jan was a warm, loving woman devoted to taking care of her husband, children, and took great joy in spoiling her grandchildren Emily Grace Hanna and Abigail Marie Hanna. Throughout all of Jan's life she was always an animal lover having pet dogs, and a cat at her side.  She also rescued many animals and birds as they crossed her path.  Jan was an avid reader and loved to travel.  Jan will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Jan is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Richard and her sister, Karlene Bunch.  She is survived by her son Steven, daughter Sandra, son-in-law Barry, granddaughters Emily and Abigail, niece and namesake Jan Bunch Rychlik and her husband Dave Goad, and her great niece Sarah Rychlik.

The graveside service will take place on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 11:30 AM, at Dallas Fort- Worth National Cemetery.

In lieu  of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Linda McNatt Care and Adoption Shelters at (940) 349-7594.
