Obituary

Ruben Maurice Retzlaff, age 64, of Lewisville, was born on November 19, 1944 in Waco, Texas to Ruben & Elois Retzlaff and passed away on August 12, 2009 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas.   He fought a strong and courageous battle with lung cancer.He attended Waco High School in Waco, Texas.  After joining the United States Navy in 1962 he served in Vietnam on active duty from 1964 -1966 on board the USS Washburn.  From there he went on to serve in the Naval Reserve until he retired in 1988.  Four month after returning from his tour in Vietnam he met the love of his life, Cheryl Elaine Buckner, whom he affectionately called "Babe".  They were married on March 3, 1967 and were each others' best friend and loved each other for 42 years.  After returning from the US Navy, Ruben went to work for AO Smith in Waco, Texas until 1968.  Upon the family moving to Dallas, Texas in 1968, Ruben went to work for DP&L where he started out as an Auxiliary Operator after which he held the following positions:  Fireman/Board Operator, Control Room Operator, Shift Supervisor, Production Supervisor, Maintenance  Supervisor and finally Operations Specialist.  He transitioned from DP&L to TUGCO where he became a supervisor in 1984.  He transitioned again with the company to TU Electric and then on to TXU Energy Future Holdings where he held the position of Operations Specialist at the Power Optimization Center in Downtown Dallas.  He served this company proudly and would have completed 40 years of service in October.Ruben served on numerous boards for the City of Lewisville since 1993 to present date.   Those boards included Zoning Board of Adjustments, Planning & Zoning Commission, and Transportation Board.  He was currently serving on the Zoning Board of Adjustment.     Ruben was a member of First Baptist Church of Lewisville.  He enjoyed being with his family, traveling and hunting.He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Retzlaff of Lewisville; his daughter Shelley Lynn Spradlin of Lewisville and son, Shane Alan Retzlaff of Keller, Texas and their spouses Keith Spradlin and Ramona Retzlaff; the joys of his life referred to him as Pop:  Emma, Abbey & Holley Spradlin; his mother, Elois Retzlaff of Allen; sisters, Vivian Bates of Allen and Gena Griffin of Austin, and their husbands Frank Bates and O'Neil Griffin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his father, Ruben Marvin Retzlaff.   Visitations were held on Friday, August 14, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville, Texas.  Funeral services will be today, Saturday, August 15, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Lewisville, Texas at 10:30 a.m. and internment will be at Memorial Park in Waco, Texas at 3:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Lewisville, 1251 Valley Ridge Boulevard, Lewisville, Texas  75077 or Lung Cancer Center at Baylor Hospital of Dallas via Baylor Healthcare Foundation, Barnett Tower, 3600 Gaston Avenue, Suite 100, Dallas, Texas  75246 in memory of Ruben Maurice Retzlaff.  For online condolences please go to www.mulkeymason.com.
