Obituary

Our sweet Robert was born to Rolland and Eleanor Ismert September 19, 1973 in Gallatin, TN.  Robert was a kind, sensitive, creative and funny child that grew into a very thoughtful, nurturing, sentimental and talented adult.  He was a father, husband, friend, son, brother, uncle, teacher, artist, photographer, filmmaker, pilot, cook, lover of music who interpreted the world as only he could through his wicked sense of humor.  Robert received a degree from the University of Texas, a master's degree from the University of North Texas and finally settled into life in Denton as a flight instructor, married Jodi Schwartz and they welcomed their daughter to the world on February 2, 2009.

Robert had this amazing ability to see life around him in new and wonderful ways.  He often documented that view in his beautiful photography.  He particularly loved being a father to Abigail - seeing the world through her eyes and teaching her new things.  He lived life in the moment, was never afraid to take risks and felt very deeply about those he loved.

Robert's joy for life was slowly darkened by his battle with severe depression and alcoholism.  His disease laid on top of him like a blanket and while he tried to kick it off it eventually covered every inch of his body steadily consuming him.  Loving Robert was a privilege, we are enriched as humans to have walked beside him during his journey both the good times and the bad.  He has taught us to find faith, to see those that suffer from similar conditions with compassion and to maintain hope for even the smallest cherished moments.

Mental illness and addiction will bring the strongest of men and women to their knees.  There are so many of us that know or love someone with these same struggles.  By no means do they not love their families and their friends but the overwhelming despair conquers and they can no longer fight.  Our ask is for anyone reading this to take a moment to reflect and realize that kindness and tolerance should prevail.  And the next time you see someone who is homeless or know someone who is alone and needs a friend you will take the time to acknowledge them and offer help.

We lost Robert February 25, 2022.  We will always know how bravely he confronted his disease and are so grateful for the years we had with him.  And while we grieve that he no longer walks this earth, we know now he is at peace.  He is survived by his wife Jodi Schwartz-Ismert, beautiful daughter Abigail Ismert, father and mother Rolland Ismert and Eleanor Ismert, brother Scott Ismert, sister Jenny Ismert and spouse Kevin Griglak and niece Bennett Ismert.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donating in Robert's name to Our Daily Bread.
