Obituary for Robert E. Lee Capps, Jr.
9/13/1942 - 9/16/2025

Robert E. Lee Capps, Jr. , known as Lee J. to family and friends, died in Denton, Texas, on September 16, 2025, at the age of 83. A service of worship celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2025, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 300 West Oak Street, Denton, Texas.

Lee J, the only child of Robert E. Lee Capps and Lucile Durham Capps, was born in Tyler, Texas, on September 13, 1942. He grew up in remote Sun Oil camps in Salmon City, Troup, Taft, Goliad, and his family finally settled in Gainesville, Texas in 1954.

Lee J. graduated from Gainesville High School, attended Cooke County Junior College, and graduated from North Texas State University in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy Reserves stationed at the NASD with the Naval Air Squadron P2V-1 Neptune crew for six years.

Lee J married Peggy Sue Wallace on May 31, 1969.

Lee J. worked for Sun Oil Company in Dallas, before becoming a FORD Motor Company man in 1968. Ford provided Lee J. with a career centered around his true passion for 34 years-automobiles.

His many hobbies included racing dragsters, restoring a 32 Ford, Boss 302 Mustang, 1935 Firetruck, collecting antique tools, serving more than 20 years on the Denton County Historical Commission.

In 1967 he was raised into membership in the Roy Stanley Masonic Lodge in Gainesville. In 1971 Lee was received as a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasons of the 32nd Degree.

Lee J is survived by Peggy his wife of 56 years, son Trey, and grandson Ro. Family members left to cherish his memory are cousins Beth Capps Mosteller, Beverly Capps Wilgus (Jack), and Jimmy Durham (Cindy): niece, Katy Neely Page (Raleigh), great-nephews Raleigh and Rhett; nephew Michael Lynn Neely (Jen Newman) and great-niece Emma, and many cousins-in-love.
