Obituary

Robert J. (Bob) Caraway passed away at his home in Denton on October 5, 2007 after a courageous 15-year battle with cancer. He was born in Tyler, February 14, 1935, to Everett Jewell and Maggie (McBride) Caraway.

He graduated from Tyler Junior College (1955), North Texas State University (UNT) (1957) and Baylor Law School in 1960. Bob was a law clerk for Judge Joe W. Sheehy in Tyler and practiced law in Dallas for 25 years. He also was a real estate broker and investor. One of the highlights of Bob's career was as the attorney for the Wilmer-Hutchens ISD when he successfully appeared before U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice to fight for equal rights for minority students in that school district.

Bob's only child, Gretchen Anne Caraway, was born in 1970 during his first marriage. In 1977, he married the love of his life Georgia (Kemp). Bob and Georgia moved from Dallas to Denton in 1984 where he practiced law and invested in real estate. He often mentioned how blessed they were to have found a hometown and good friends in Denton. He took great joy in supporting Georgia in her interests throughout their 30-year marriage.

His wife, Georgia, and his beloved daughter, Gretchen Gudger, and her husband, Greg, and several cousins, and numerous friends in Tyler, Dallas, and Denton survive Bob.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father and pets Tipi, Tigr, CoCo, and his best buddy, Tuffy.

A memorial service is to be held, Sunday, October 21 at 3:00 at the Courthouse-on-the-Square, 110 W. Hickory, Denton, TX with Pastor Wendy Curran officiating. A private burial of Bob's cremains will be held for family and close friends.

Honorary pallbearers are Danny Cunningham, Richard Davis, John Gilley, Albert Hill, Hal Jackson, Karl Kuby, Gilbert Martin, L.A. Nelson (posthumously), Bill Shaffer, and Cary Wofford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Denton County Museums, 110 W. Hickory, Denton TX 76201.
