Bane
August 3, 1938 – June 28, 2024
Dr. Robert King Bane passed peacefully in his sleep June 28, 2024 at the age of 85. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Terry Pettit Bane, four children, Lisa Hull, Tracy Ormand, Tony Bane and Leslie Bane, and sister Carol Salmon, brother-in-law Dick Salmon and nieces Brandy and Christi Salmon, one half-sister, Marigayle Wood, and 2 half-brothers, Bill and Jim Wardlow. He was blessed with six grandchildren, Emily Salmon and Aubrey Hull, Reese Ormand and Haley Moores, Gavin Bane and Kylie Bane, and seven great-grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his infant Russell Bane, mother Louise Brackney Bane, father Monte Wardlow, Sr. stepfather Grady Bane, granddaughter Haley Moores, and cousin ("brother") Tony Riley, and his half brother Monte Wardlow Jr.
Robert was born in Denton, Texas to Monte Wardlow and Louise Brackney Bane on August 3, 1938 and was raised in Garland, Texas. He graduated from Garland High School in 1956 where he was voted "most witty." He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a Minor in History from University of North Texas in 1960 and earned his Doctorate in Elementary Education from the University of Florida in 1968.
He was known to many as "Dr. Bane, Dr. Bob, Bob Bane" to name a few during his 36-year tenure as a professor of elementary education at the University of North Texas. Some accomplishments during his teaching profession included earning the distinction of Professor Emeritus, the Golden Eagle Certificate in 1960, and being known for his outstanding abilities working with doctoral students especially when writing theses and in his supervision of student teachers. Robert was one of the first professors at UNT to introduce computers to the college of education, and developed and ran the computer lab for many years. He was well liked and respected by his students and peers. Robert was a Theta Chi alumni. A favorite time of year for him was UNT homecoming week when he always attended the parade with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed attending football games and Theta Chi Alumni functions during the year.
Robert was passionate about computer technology using that interest and his skills to form the company called Schoolhouse Software, and then developed a gradebook program designed for schools and teachers that was successfully received in the education community. He was a photography enthusiast his entire life owning two studios that specialized in portrait and wedding photography. He was a movie buff with his favorite movie being the western classic Shane. When his children were young, Robert enjoyed taking them fishing, attending games, dance recitals, and always giving love and support throughout their lives.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust St., Denton, TX. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. with the service beginning at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to either the Alzheimer's Association: 225 N.
