Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Richard H. Huckaby, of Denton, TX, on April 10, 2025.

Richard was born to Hoyle and Dorothy Huckaby in Galveston, TX, on September 25, 1936.  He grew up in Houston, TX, where he attended St. Thomas all-boy Catholic School.  While in high school, he enjoyed playing sports and began dating the love of his life, Jan Parrish, who attended St. Agnes, an all-girls Catholic High School in Houston, TX.

Following high school, Richard earned a BS in Civil Engineering at the University of Houston.  During this time, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Jan, and together they spent the next happy 69 years traveling the world and raising their children, Steven Hoyle Huckaby and Sandra K. Huckaby-Hanna.  A man of strong will, determination and love of country, Richard joined the USMC following graduation from the University of Houston and served as an officer for 31 years and ultimately achieved the rank as Brig. General. He served in Vietnam, Western Europe, Okinawa, as well as many places in the US to include MI, CA, OH, NC, VA, with his final post as Commanding General at Camp Pendleton, CA.

While in the Marine Corp., Richard earned several commendations to include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Naval Commendation and Achievement Medals and the Bronze Star of Valor Medal.

Upon retiring from the military, Richard turned to serving the community.  He worked at the Ronald McDonald house in Lubbock, TX for a year.  Richard obtained a Master of Public Administration from Texas Tech and served as Manager for the city of Corinth for 8 years. Richard aided Corinth through a growth spurt and new development.  He also participated with Lake Cities Education Foundation and Chamber of Commerce Corinth.  From there, he moved on to teach Government at North Central Texas College.  Throughout the 18 years that he taught at the college, Richard was dedicated to serving his community with the Lion's Club of Lake Dallas and he never met a stranger, loving nothing more than striking up conversation with others.

In his younger years, Richard's hobbies included scuba diving, camping, an avid deep-sea fisher, and leading his son's Boy Scout Troop on many outdoor adventures in wide open spaces.  In his older years, Richard's passion turned to charitable acts, and serving his community through his time, leadership and resolute commitment to support those less fortunate.  Throughout all of Richard's life he was always an animal lover, having a pet dog or two at his side, as well as a cat, and once even a duck and pet bunny.

Richard was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather who dedicated his entire life to serving his country, community, and supporting his family through encouragement and unconditional love.  He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.   His memory will live on through the stories and memories shared by all who knew and loved him.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Jan, their son Steven H. Huckaby, and daughter Sandra Huckaby-Hanna and son-in-law Barry Hanna, and granddaughters Emily and Abby Hanna, and his niece and spouse Jan Bunch Rychlik and Dave Goad, and his great niece Sarah Rychlik.

The service will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 10:30, at the Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home, Denton, TX.  The private interment service will take place with full honors on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 10:15, at the Dallas- Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, TX.
