Richard Michael Cooney was born May 18, 1936 in Manchester, Iowa. This year he celebrated his 70th birthday at a big bash where all his friends and family roasted and toasted a dearly loved husband, father and friend.
He was preceded in death by both his parents John Peter Cooney and Betty Sheldon, son Richard Victor Cooney and brother, John Gary Cooney.
He is survived by wife Carol Sue Cooney, children Michelle Ann and partner Barbara Rae Harrison, Kelly Jane Pugh, Colleen Marie and husband Shaun David Wilson, Rebecca Cooney and husband Christopher Paul Stewart; grandchildren, Brionna, Rachel and Jordan Pugh, Madison and Taylor Wilson, Reilly and Ryan Stewart; Great Grandchildren Elijah and Isaiah Pugh; siblings Joan Fritz and husband Mike, Kathy Moreland and husband Lynne, Mary Smith and husband Mike, and Bobbie Cooney and wife Cindy. He is also survived by many loving in-laws, friends, nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Cretin High School in St. Paul, MN in 1955 and in 1959 received a B. A. from The College of Saint Thomas also in St. Paul, MN. He loved sports and played ice hockey while at Cretin and also played four years at Saint Thomas. He was drafted into the U. S. Army XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, N. C. He retired from the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M) after 35 years.
Richard and Carol were married on a beautiful summer day and celebrated 47 years of unconditional love this year. Richard enjoyed traveling the world, and spending time with his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and touched many lives. He will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at St. Mark Catholic Church, 2800 Pennsylvania, Denton, with MSGR. Joseph Schmucher, officiating. The viewing will be Tuesday, November 21, 2006 from 6 P.M. with a rosary said at 8 P.M. in the Chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton.
