Dr. Raymond Lee Sommer of Alvord (formerly of Bartonville), Texas passed away on Nov. 23, 2017. Ray was born August 2, 1952 in New Braunfels, TX to Louise Fischer Sommer and Ernst Fritz Sommer. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ray graduated from Seguin High School, the University of Texas in Austin, and UTMB Medical School in Galveston and performed his residency in Internal Medicine at Scott &White Hospital in Temple, TX. He was also a boarded Emergency Physician and practiced ER medicine for 37 years, where he was known for having both a brusque bedside manner and a lively sense of humor
Ray was a meticulous planner who organized many adventure-packed family vacations and camping trips. He never tired of visiting museums, historical landmarks, and national parks and wilderness areas. He generously shared his passion for travel as well as his love for practical jokes with his family.
Ray is survived by his wife Alanna Martin Sommer, brother Alan Sommer and his wife Shirley, brother Larry and his wife Dr. Wendy Merola, step-daughter Christi Wilson and her husband Geremy, step-son Daniel Hebert and his wife Heather, step-son Kyle Everett and his wife Abby, son Lance Sommer, son Kent Sommer, 6 grandchildren and many other beloved relatives.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 9, 2017, at Marker Cellars Winery, 1484 CR 2585, Alvord, TX. Gathering at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM, and reception with lunch at 12:00 PM.
Ray loved being a Boy Scout Leader and some of his favorite times were spent helping his sons Lance and Kent achieve their Eagle Rank. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to:
