Ray Hampden Janes, Jr., of Denton, died at age 88 on Thursday, April 29, 2021. He was born to Ray H. Janes and Catherine Davis Janes on June 1, 1932 in Dallas, Texas. Ray was married to Shirley Ann Harker of Pennsylvania in 1955. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, a son Ray H. Janes, III and wife Cheryl of Highland Village, two granddaughters Katie Janes Freeman, (Blake) of Dallas and Rachel Janes of Highland Village, sister-in-law, Ruth Spangler of Virginia, sister-in-law Kathlyn Janes of Irving. He was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Kilgore and brother, Wayne King Janes.
He was awarded a BS from what is now Texas A & M Commerce in 1953. He then earned an MA from Central Michigan University in 1974 and an M.Ed from TCU in 1977. Ray retired in 1975 as a Lt. Col. after a career as a Fighter Interceptor pilot in the USAF. He also served in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller with the 1/9 th Air Cavalry Squadron and later flew over Laos. Ray earned the DFC, Bronze Star w/V device and 13 Air Medals. He enjoyed a second career as a teacher with the Fort Worth ISD retiring in 1992. He remained active in his retirement by writing several books and serving as a volunteer for several organizations including the Cavanaugh Flight Museum and as a driving instructor for the AARP. He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 300 W. Oak St., Denton. Interment will be at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas at 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 26, 2021.
Memorial donations may be made to The Cavanaugh Flight Museum 4572 Claire Chennault Dr. Addison, TX 75001.
