Obituary

Patricia Lou Baker Ragsdale passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of January 14, 2019. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Leland Isaac Baker and Lulu Helen Pence Baker on August 18, 1923. When she was just six weeks old, her family moved to Breckenridge, Texas. For most of her life, Patricia was known as Pat or Patsy Lou. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1940 and began attending Southwestern College where she majored in commercial art. While at Southwestern, she was voted the most beautiful girl on campus by the actor Charles Boyer. The following year, she transferred to Texas Tech University where she met the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Warren Ragsdale.

Dick and Pat were married on July 25, 1945 in San Diego California where Dick was stationed in the Navy. After the War, the pair moved to Chicago for Optometry school and upon graduation, they opened Dick's first optometric practice in Slaton, Texas. In 1948, Dick and Pat moved to Sherman, Texas where she gave birth to their first child, Richard Leland Ragsdale, followed shortly after by another son, Mark Stephen Ragsdale.

In 1956, the family moved to Denton, Texas, where they established a successful optometric practice and became very involved in the community. In 1961, Pat gave birth to her third child, Stacy Lee Ragsdale. Pat was so surprised by the arrival of a girl that she argued with the doctor, telling him, "I can't have had a girl! I can only have boys!"

Pat loved her community. She was the chairwoman of the United Way Drive, a Republican Precinct Chairwoman, a member of Head Start for underprivileged children, a regular volunteer delivering meals on wheels and a charter member and Past President of the Denton Benefit League. She was incredibly creative and loved to sew, paint and design beautiful things. Pat was also a member of the Petal Pushers for a time, winning several top awards for her flower arrangements.

In 1965, after much consideration and prayer, Pat and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For her and her family, this was one of the crowning decisions of her life. She served in many leadership positions for the Church, including the Relief Society President, Stake Public Affairs Specialist and early morning seminary teacher for four years. Pat also served in the Dallas Texas Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 18 years, served an 18 month mission with Dick at the London England Temple and a year long mission at the Liberty Jail Visitors Center for the Church.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, sister, parents, and many, many dear friends.

Pat leaves behind her sons with their wives, Dr. Rick and Debbie Ragsdale and Dr. Mark and Jennifer Ragsdale, her daughter with her husband, Stacy and Brian Holman, her grandchildren with their spouses, Kyle and Erin Ragsdale, Jason and Mimi Ragsdale, Dr. Shelly Ragsdale, Dr. Lee and Estee Ragsdale, Dr. Shane and Marilee Ragsdale, Dr. Steve and Jessica Ragsdale, Dr. Colton and Jessica Ragsdale, Dr. Amy Ragsdale, Patricia Ann and Todd Rogers, Kelsey and Trevor Harmon, and Chandler Holman, her nephews Johnny, Hayden, Mike, and Todd McMillian, as well as 23 great grandchildren.
