Obituary

Olive Lee Stephens left this world just in time to bang the gavel and call to order all of her constituents from Shady Shores who have gone on to Heaven before her. She moved to Shady Shores in 1957, and immediately became involved in the community. She was a member of the local Home Demonstration Club for a number of years and co-founder of the Lake Cities Library. In 1963, she was elected to the Shady Shores City Council and serve in that capacity until 1973 when she was successfully elected Mayor. She was undefeated as Mayor until 2011 when she announced that she would not seek another term of office. She served on the Denton County American Cancer Society Board for 25 years and was a member of the Denton County Historical Society for a number of years. Her favorite accomplishment was serving on Denco 9-1-1. She was appointed to serve on the steering committee to organize a campaign to establish 9-1-1 in Denton County in 1989. She was then appointed to the Board of Denco 9-1-1 and served in that capacity until 2013. Mayor Stephens was like a library of tribal knowledge about Denton County Texas, receiving numerous awards for her volunteer efforts to make Shady Shores and Denton County a better place for the citizens. Visitation will begin Thursday Nov. 2, 2017 at 9:00AM at Denton Funeral Home with a funeral service to begin at 10:00AM at Denton Funeral Home Chapel. Private family burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. In lieu of flowers, please make contribution to the American Cancer Society.
