Myrtle Fay Hood was born in Balmorhea, Texas on June 5, 1926. She grew up in Balmorhea and Pecos and graduated from Pecos High School in 1943. From an early age, she and her sister could be heard pickin' and singin', and performed several times at the Pecos Rodeo.
She was the daughter of Wilbur Ray and Ella Mae Weinacht Moore. She married Phillip W. Hood on October 4, 1946 in Pecos and had two sons, Phillip Ray Hood and William Arthur Hood, all are deceased.
She moved to Denton in 1981. She was a gospel singer and is remembered fondly by all those who heard her lovely voice accompanied by her lively 12-string guitar. She felt her singing was a ministry and she blessed many lives. She was always ready to share in laughter and kidding and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Her performing group in Denton, Texas, known as Myrtle Hood and Friends Band performed throughout the area at various nursing, rehabilitation and assisted living centers. For many years at Christmas, local college students would join her in caroling, as well.
A very special thanks to Freda Hedges, her family, and the wonderful staff at Carriage House Assisted Living for their love and support.
