IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael John
Conroy
July 31, 1942 – January 16, 2024
Michael John Conroy, age 81, of Corinth, Texas, passed away on January 16. 2024, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Michael was born on July 31, 1942, in Dayton, Ohio, as the youngest child of Marion Kiel and Howard John Conroy. He was a delight to his oldest sister Faith and teased his older sister Pat with affection. Mike grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, attended high school there where he was captain of the football team. He went on to study Physical Education at Delaware State University. He received a graduate assistantship at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Exercise of Physiology. He was in the Army National Guard from 1963 - 1971, where he served in Delaware, Illinois and Fort Bliss, Texas, in Officer's Candidate School where he was the honor graduate.
In 1966, Mike met his wife, Sharon at her apartment when he came to ask her roommate out. Sharon answered the door and that began their story of true love. They were engaged 10 days later and were married on February 24, 1967, in Dover, Delaware. Mike and Sharon went on to have three children: Shawn, Bill, and Sarah. His strong Christian faith was always evident in his dedicated role as a loving husband, devoted father/ grandfather and committed educator/community leader.
Mike began his teaching career in Illinois but couldn't wait to bring his young family back to Texas. He became an adaptive physical education instructor in Plano ISD, working with the most profound and handicapped students in physical education. He received the honor of Teacher of the Year his first year at Alldridge Elementary, where he was adored by his students, staff and families. He continued his career in McKinney ISD as the Adjustments Education Coordinator/special needs instructor, and biology and marketing teacher at McKinney High School. Filming the football games led him to be appointed the Asst. Public Relations position for MISD. He became the Director of Technology and Career Pathways and was appointed Assistant Principal of McKinney High. During his time as the Asst. Principal, Mike initiated the Academic Letter Sweater Program for Outstanding Achievement. He was honored as Principal of the Year by several student organizations. His background of attending an all minority undergraduate university made him a perfect fit to relate to minorities. He also took great pleasure in serving his community as the General Secretary and President of the Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.
In 2000, Mike and Sharon retired from their careers as educators and moved to Seneca, Missouri, to support Sharon's mother with her ailing health. They moved back to Texas in 2005 and enjoyed being involved with their grandchildren. Mike enjoyed a lifetime of exercise, photography, gardening and building relationships with both those he loved and complete strangers. Mike's greatest love was his beautiful wife who has been devoted to his care and quality of life. Mike was a self-made man who continuously worked to improve himself, his environment and the lives of others.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon, his daughter, Shawn Franke, and her husband, Lewis, of Pilot Point, Texas; son, William Conroy, and his wife, Holly, of Spring, Texas; and daughter, Sarah Davee, and her husband, Curtis, of Argyle, Texas; niece, Mylinda Morris, of Yukon, Oklahoma; nephews, Steve and Jeff Niles of Los Angeles, California; and his beloved brother-in-law Dr. Roger Roberts and wife, Kristi, of Wichita, Kansas.
