Obituary

Mercer Lamar Day, 86, of Denton has gone to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He was born December 6, 1929, in rural Madison County, Alabama, to Columbus Turner and Exa Day.  He is survived by his lovely bride of 68 years, Annie Florence (Lipscomb) Day, daughters Retha Day and her husband Brent Johnson, Linda Pilson and her husband Phillip Pilson, and Deborah Goss and her husband Randy Goss along with ten grandchildren, Laura Locke, Phillip Pilson Jr., Denise Wagner, Steven Pilson, Michael Miller, Christy Durbin, Nicholas Pilson, Amanda Goss, Daniel Goss and Jessica Goss.  He was blessed to see 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  Others that have survived him are three brothers, Alvin Day, Jack Day, Jesse Day and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by both his parents, brothers - Willie Mert Day, John Henry Day, Horace Day, David Day, Studie Day, and three sisters - Dorothy Farrar, Jean Evans and Berta Sue Story.

Mercer grew up in Etowah County of Alabama, where his father owned a lumber/sawmill.  He worked for his father until he joined the Merchant Marines.  After his service in the Gulf of Mexico he went to Chicago, Illinois and worked several jobs, but retired after 30 years from Teletype Corporation, a Lucent Company now owned by Nokia.  Mercer enjoyed playing checkers and taught whoever would let him.  He played in many checker tournaments and often won first place.  He often talked about when the grand master of checkers came to his home to play him and they ended in a draw. He served over 400 people in Cherokee County, Alabama delivering the Gadsden Times newspaper during his retirement years back in Centre, Alabama.  He would often stop at the small grocery store to bring eggs, milk and bread, with their newspaper to the widow ladies on the mountain.  He was a quiet soul of service, and he loved people in a huge way.  He loved his family and especially all the grandchildren.  He would visit each one when they were born but never stayed too long since he never liked hospitals.  He was a member of Southmont Baptist Church of Denton, TX.

Services for Mercer will be on Saturday, October 29 th at 12:00 Noon at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home, Denton, Texas. A visitation will held from 11:00 Am until service time.  He will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park following the services.
