Obituary

Mary Helen Hagar Shockey was born May 30, 1932 in Fort Worth, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Leo S. Hagar. She died on April 10, 2016 in Denton. Mary graduated from Ursuline Academy in Dallas in 1949 and was awarded the Distinguished Alumna in 2004. She graduated from St. Paul School of Nursing in 1952. On June 6, 1953, she married Hubert Gannon Shockey, Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas. She led an exemplary career, developing the nursing standards of care at Methodist Hospital in Houston, serving as President of the Texas Gulf Coast Quality Assurance Medical System Association, published in the Quality Patient Care Professional Journal. She served as President of the Parish Council at St. Francis de Sales in Houston. She was active in many ministries at every parish she attended. She taught us all how to play cards, dance, enjoy music and our family. She loved big Thanksgiving dinners, celebrating St. Patrick's Day, Elvis, and her faith. She was preceded in death by her parents Leo S. and Frances Marie Hagar; her brothers John Michael Hagar and most recently Leo S. Hagar Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Hubert Gannon Shockey Jr.; her children Terry McJilton and her husband Gayland; Patricia Helstowski; Suzan James and her husband Frank; Michael Shockey; her sister Nora Anne Wogan and her husband Kenneth; her grandchildren Joshua McJilton and wife Marie; Kate McJilton Clark and husband Jerod; Riley Gannon McJilton; Mary Jenna McJilton Berner and husband Paul; John Gannon Helstowski and wife Elizabeth; Dana Helstowski and fiancé Doug Wegener; Jennifer Simpson and husband James; Lauren Hoke and husband Monty; Wes James. She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews. Services will be held Friday April 15th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N. Bonnie Brae – Denton Texas. Visitation is at 11:00 am, followed by a rosary at 11:30. Funeral Mass will follow at noon. Interment will be at Calvary Hill Cemetery on Lombardy in Dallas on Saturday at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ursuline Academy in Dallas, Texas.
