Mary Lou
Batey
June 19, 1933 – May 18, 2025
Mary Lou Batey, age 91, of Denton, Texas passed away May 18, 2025 in
Denton, Texas. Mary Lou was born to Walter and Bula Yarbrough on June
19, 1933 in Woodson, Texas.
She grew up on a ranch and attended Woodson High School where she
was valedictorian. She highly valued education and attended Texas
Woman's University in Denton, TX where she graduated with honors with
a BS in Elementary Education. She met many lifelong friends while
attending TWU. She later continued her excellence in education by
earning her Master in Education from TWU.
She met her husband, Wallace Batey, while in college and they were
married June 3, 1955. Mary Lou and Wallace shared 69 years of marriage
before his passing on July 16, 2024.
She was a highly accomplished educator.
She loved teaching and devoted
her career of 35 years teaching elementary
school children in the
Denton Independent School District.
Mary Lou and Wallace built their home of 60 years as a wonderful
gathering place for family and friends. They were tremendous hosts and
everyone felt welcome and comfortable in their home.
Grandma, as she was
known by her many grandchildren, was an excellent
cook. Her Sunday
dinners were highly attended affairs which no one
wanted to miss. She
carried on this tradition for many years and her
meals were the epitome
of home cooking. She always prepared a special
dish for each individual.
Her dinners were never just a simple meal but
always a feast with a dozen
delicious dishes. Every meal and birthday
were accompanied by a special,
custom-made cake which was always
uniquely- crafted to the individual.
She loved her many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and
dedicated her life to making them feel special and loved. She was always
ready to help in any way she could. She truly had a servant's heart. She
also loved to play games. Each meal was always followed by a game of
Canasta, dominoes or some card game.
Mary Lou's hands were never still. She loved to make quilts. She made
hundreds of hand-made quilts. Every occasion, such as a birthday,
wedding, or anniversary gave Mary Lou an opportunity to hand craft a
special quilt.
Mary Lou was a lifelong Methodist was most recently a devoted member
of First United Methodist Church in Denton. It was evident to those who
knew her that she lived a Christ-like life by example.
Mary Lou is survived by her sister, Patsy Fowler, her children and their
spouses, Lyndal and Claire Batey, Jeff and Brenda Dulin, Steve and
Barbara Hard, Pat and Bridget Dansby, and her grandchildren, Luke Batey,
Mark and Victoria Batey, Daniel and Jennifer Batey, Scott Dulin, Corey
Dulin, Sarah Dulin, Cole and Jennifer Cunningham, Silas and Stacy Martin,
John and Amy Carter, Curtis Hard, Colton Hard, Brazos Hard, sixteen great
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Mary Lou will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 from
1:00-
3:00 pm at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home in Denton
followed by a memorial service at 3:00 pm. A graveside service will be
held at Roselawn Memorial Park following the memorial service.
