Mary Margaret Baker, née Lawrence, a beloved nurse, devoted grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away gently on May 12, 2026, in Irving, Texas. Born on May 27, 1926, in Denton County, she graced this world with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering compassion for nearly a century.

Mary Margaret’s professional journey began at North Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas, where she earned her degree as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Her dedication to caregiving blossomed throughout her distinguished career, which touched many lives as she worked in nursing homes and hospitals before her final professional chapter at Gilbert Medical and Surgical Clinic until her well-earned retirement. Beyond her professional role, Mary Margaret was a beacon of comfort who went above and beyond—checking in on elderly patients even on her days off, offering smiles, strength, and solace. 

she was a steadfast foundation for her family, especially after the profound loss of her daughter Mary Jo (Jody) Thompson. To her grandchildren, she was more than a grandmother; she was a mother, a confidante, a teacher, and a tireless source of courage and hope. Her home was filled with the sweet aroma of her baked treats—cookies, pies, and fried catfish—which brought joy to many, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Her personality reflected a blend of gentle strength and youthful spirit. Mary Margaret never lost her sense of fun or the ability to embrace life with enthusiasm and joy . She nurtured a deep love for gardening, sewing, quilting, hunting, fishing, and photography. Above all, she treasured time spent celebrating life’s journeys with her grandchildren, family, and friends, creating a tapestry of affection and shared happiness.

The memories she leaves behind are tender and vivid. Garrett fondly recalls their joyous afternoons baking his favorite cookies and their little road trips to various state parks and lakes, moments of simple yet profound connection. Theresa carries dear memories of visits to the local vegetable stand in Irving, outings to Big State Drug fountain for lunch and Saturday mall trips for Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and heartfelt journeys to Argyle to see family—the cherished bonds she shared with Mary Margaret are a testament to her enduring love. Robby’s summers spent with Mary Margaret were filled with endless conversations, and the warmth of pumpkin pies made especially for his birthdays, underscoring the nurturing heart that defined her life.

Mary Margaret's family, both near and far, remain a testament to her loving legacy. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Theresa Marshall, Garrett Marshall, Robert Mortimer, and John Mortimer; her stepson Don Vernon Lewis; Jenny and Mackey Alred, along with Aaron and Lisa McLain and their family; Mindy and Heath Pell; Jimmy Clark; Amanda and James Baker and sons; Davy and Jan Clark and family; Art Baker and family; Patricia and Danny Baird and family; Laura and Jay Boxell and family; and Virginia Craven and family. Though she now rests, their lives continue to be enriched by the love and lessons she imparted.

Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her dear husband Arthur B Baker Jr, infant son , treasured daughter Mary Jo (Jody) Thompson, brothers Sylvester and Royce Lawrence, sister Peggy Arnold, niece Connie Clark, brother and sister-in-law Elvin and Velma Baker, sister-in-law Effie Inez Kelly, nephew Randy Kelly, and husband Leonard Don Lewis.

A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park, located at 3801 Roselawn Drive in Denton, Texas, on May 22, 2026. The service will commence at 1:00 p.m. and conclude at 2:00 p.m., offering a final moment for family and friends to gather and honor a life so beautifully lived.

Mary Margaret Baker’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of the lives she touched—her kindness, joy, and unwavering love continue to inspire all who knew her. Though she has departed from this earthly realm, her spirit remains a guiding light, a cherished presence in the hearts of her family and community forever.
