Obituary

Mrs. Marjorie Laurine Bacon Odom, 101, died on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Good Samaritan Village Health Center in Denton. Born on February 23, 1904 in Austin, Mrs. Odom was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Robert Francis Bacon of Austin, Texas, the sister of the late Gerald Haralson Bacon, and the widow of Arve H. Odom, whom she married September 1, 1926 in Austin, Texas, who preceded her in death on January 26, 1960. Mrs. Odom was a 1925 graduate of the University of Texas with a B. S. in Home Economics and in 1940 received her M. A. degree in Early Childhood Development from Texas Women's University. A beloved teacher and friend to her students, she taught in Orange Public Schools, the Masonic Home in Fort Worth, and in Denton Public Schools. After her retirement in 1963, she helped organize the Day School at Denton First Methodist Church where she was Director and taught the four-year-olds classes until she was eighty. Blessed with good health and a joy for living and travel, she was always active in church, civic, and square dance groups. She enjoyed dancing, handcrafts, ceramics, swimming, and bridge. Until her health declined at ninety-nine, she volunteered at the Denton Senior Citizens Center, and in the Good Samaritan "Miller Store". Mrs. Odom was proud to have received her award for over 2,000 hours and 25 years of volunteer work at the Denton State School after her retirement. Mrs. Odom was a member of Omicron Nu (honorary Home Economics Sorority), a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Denton.
Mrs. Odom is survived by her nephew Gerald H. Bacon, Jr. of Lynchburg,, Virginia; great-nephews; Gordon Leslie Parker, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, and Robert Warren Bacon of Jacksonville, Florida; great nieces: Mrs. Dianne Parker Johnston Brune of Gaston, Oregon, and Mrs. Jenifer Lee Bacon Whitehouse, of Lexington, Kentucky; great-great-nephews; Sean Tristam Bacon, Gordon Leslie Parker, III; great-great-nieces; Shannon Johnston Meyer, Mary Elizabeth Bacon Mulcahey, Sarah Jane Whitehouse, and Abigail Catherine Whitehouse.
Rev. William C. Crouch will conduct the services in the Chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home of Denton, Texas, at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 16, 2006. Burial will take place at the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Texas at 12:00 Noon, on Tuesday, January 17,2006. Pallbearers will be Gene Davis, Roland Payne, William Wallace, Tommy Davis, Dick Selby, Steve Selby, and Dan Harrison. The family will be at the funeral home for visitation from 4 P.M. until 5 P.M. Sunday, January 15, 2006.
The family would like to give special thanks for the ten years of wonderful help and the gentle kind care shown this special lady by the Good Samaritan Village residents, staff, employees, Hospice Nurse Kirsten Kaae, as well as Dr. G. E. Adami, Dr. G. A. Aillon, Dr. Glen Genovese, and the staff of Denton Regional Medical Center.
