Margaret Violet Mesaros Grubbs
1925-2025
Margaret Violet Mesaros Grubbs died Sept 3, 2025 at home surrounded by loved ones. She was born January 26, 1925 on the family farm in Homer, Morgan County, Ohio. Her parents, Lewis and Katherine Mesaros, were immigrants from Satzmarcseke, Hungary entering the country at Ellis Island, NY in 1906 and 1909.
Margaret lived a normal farm girl's type of life in rural Ohio in the years preceding the start of WWII. After Pearl Harbor, she left high school to travel to Portland, Oregon where her brother was stationed. It was there that she met Pfc. Albert B. (A.B.) Grubbs in 1942 and was married in Vancouver, WA on Oct. 7, 1942 beginning a partnership that would last until his death 65 years later in 2008. She traveled several times by train between Ohio and the west coast until A.B. was deployed to the Pacific Theater in September, 1944. Two sons, Albert and Tommy, were born in Ohio. She welcomed A.B. home in Glouster, Ohio in November, 1945 after his return to the states and discharge from the Army.
After the first long winter and working in the coal mining industry, A.B. and Margaret decided to load up their family and belongings into their Model A and move to Dallas, Texas near A.B.'s family. There they lived in post-war veteran' housing near the Lisbon Veterans Hospital until a home was purchased in the Lisbon area. Two more children were born in the years there, Jerry Lewis and Margaret Ann. They remained in that area until the mid-sixties when they moved to Lake Dallas, then to Corinth, and later to her present home in Denton, Texas.
Margaret was a dedicated home-maker caring for her family and being active in her children's school activities. She earned extra money to support the family lifestyle by taking in ironing and selling embroidery and crochet items. Her sons sold many of her bed spreads, table cloths, pillow cases, doilies door to door to appreciative customers in the neighborhood. She was employed in Denton at Russell Neuman Manufacturing based on her sewing expertise.
Margaret was a devout Catholic and long-time member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church first at its original Elm Street Sanctuary and later the new site on Bonnie Brae St. Christmas, Easter and national holidays were all observed in grand fashion with church and family activities and holiday meals. Margaret and A.B. proudly displayed the American Flag at their home proclaiming their patriotic support of the country. She prayed the rosary daily, watched religious programming on EWTN, and attended religious ceremonies when able.
While healthy, she was active in the choir and other active groups cleaning and decorating the sanctuary as needed. She was active with A.B. in the Knights of Columbus (a Catholic fraternal organization that provides chartable and social opportunities for its members).
On the occasion of her 100th birthday this year, as matriarch of the family she was the center of the celebration. The weekend was dedicated to visits in her home for pictures and birthday cake by all of her family that could make the event. The mutual love between her and her family was in full view as they all felt blessed by the occasion. The event was punctuated with a Certificate of Papal Blessing presented by her children.
Margaret is survived by her daughter Margaret Ann and sons Albert Billy Jr. (Mary), Tommy Lee, Jerry Lewis Sr. (Nancy); seven grandchildren Albert Billy III (Deborah), Jack (Sylvia), Jennifer (Hilton Baltodano), Monica Nachtwey (Steven), Katherine Boles (Russell), Kristie Glidden (Aaron), Jerry Jr. (Heather); and 15 great-grandchildren Brian Grubbs, Sophie Grubbs, Pierce Grubbs, Marlon Grubbs, Hudson Nachtwey, Camryn Nachtwey, Margaret Boles, Reese Boles, Grace Glidden, Aaron Gliddon, Hannah Glidden, Jacob Glidden, Emma Grubbs, Gavin Grubbs, and Conner Wright.
