Obituary

Malcolm Walworth (he would always say, "It's spelled like 'how much is a wall worth' with only one L.") finished the race the Lord put before him on Monday, January 13, 2020. He loved the Lord Jesus very much and loved the church, Christ's Body.

Malcolm was a loving husband and father and leaves behind Ruth Walworth, his spouse for 58 years, and his three children, Todd, Scott and Mindy. The seven grandchildren, Mark, Joshua, Emma, Reser, Jonathan, Justice, and Noah, will miss their grandpa and the food, fellowship, and insight in life that he imparted to them.

Malcolm was born to two poor Nazarene missionaries that had just returned to the states after 15 years of mission work along the tributaries of the Amazon River in South America. His parents were in their 40s when they gave birth to him. He was raised in Northern California outside the small mountain town of Angel's Camp.

When Malcolm was six, his father took a pastor position in Marfa, Texas. During a gospel meeting where his father was preaching, Malcolm came to know his Savior and Friend, Jesus Christ. His father died when Malcolm was nine years old. They believe the many times he contracted malaria overseas had weakened his body, and he was not able to recover from sickness.

Malcolm grew up very lonely as a child in the mountains. In high school, he and his mother moved to southern California.  While attending Point Loma Nazarene University, he participated in a youth gospel organization and met Ruth at a wedding of a mutual friend. Malcolm and Ruth were married just before his Army enlistment, and shortly after marriage, were off to Virginia where they spent the next few years. Malcolm served as an aircraft mechanic, stationed at Ft. Eustice.  He wanted to become a flying missionary after the Army and supply missionaries in remote parts of the world, but an unexpected surprise in the form of a baby changed that plan.

Malcolm then served as a Nazarene youth pastor for several years and started working toward a degree in Religious Education, all while caring for a wife and three children. He worked as a meter reader and a postal worker while studying to finish his degree. He used to say that his goal was "to beat his kids through college", which he did, earning his degree in 1968.

In 1969, Malcolm attended a meeting of the Church in Los Angeles for the first time.  This was a dramatic change from his previous experiences as a Christian. Malcolm began to know Christ as his life.

Malcolm worked as a probation officer in the juvenile division in Los Angeles.  He was a church planter, and after a move to Missouri, worked as a probation and parole officer for adults.  After a move to Chicago, he started working as a carpenter. Later, in Daly City, California and Flagstaff, Arizona, he was a superintendent for a commercial construction company. Eventually, he owned his own contracting business in southern California.

In 2010, Malcolm and Ruth retired to Denton, Texas, where Malcolm enjoyed his church family and living closer to his children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all the nurses, aides, and staff at the Denton Rehabilitation Center and Aspen Hospice for their care for Malcolm during the last lap of the race of his life.

A time of remembrance will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at the Church in Denton, 411 Thomas St., Denton, Texas 76201.

Instead of flowers, the family encourages you to take someone you love out for waffles or for breakfast.
