Obituary

Lucile Cowles Guess passed away on June 27, 2007 in Denton, Texas, after a long

and courageous fight against cancer. Her family will always cherish the loving and

caring support she received from church, friends, and neighbors.

Lucile was born on December 27, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Harper Brown

and Clara Dansie Cowles. She was the first of three children and the first grandchild

on both sides of the family. Full of the adventurous spirit, nurtured by travel with her

Army father and continued with her Army husband, Lucile had traveled to most of the

states and many foreign countries, including much of western Europe, Greece, and

Turkey, Egypt, Canada, and New Zealand. She was a devoted member of the

Mormon Church her entire adult life and the descendant of Mormon pioneers in all her

family lines.

In Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, she met future husband, Carl B. Guess, while both her military

men were assigned there, her dad in the artillery school and Second Lieutenant Guess,

on his very first posting after graduation from the United States Military Academy and

commissioning as an artillery officer. They were blessed with four children and eight

grandchildren, the youngest being twins John Alexander and Elizabeth Catherine

born January of this year to the youngest son Randolph and his wife Elizabeth Guess.

Lucile's wisdom and compassion touched the lives of many in the church where she

was a bible school teacher and served in the Relief Society and children's organizations.

She was a natural educator and an English teacher by choice and profession, having been

assigned to both Denton High School and Ryan High School in Denton in her twenty

years of teaching. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree and received her teacher

education from the University of North Texas, but had attended a number of schools,

including the Universities of Utah and Oklahoma, while traveling with her father and

husband.

She is survived by her husband, Carl; her four children; her brother Col. James H.

Cowles and his wife, Frances, and sister Lynne Cowles Gabrish and husband, Bill.

She is also survived by one niece and numerous nephews, her beloved stray canines,

Tippie, Bud, Sparky, and Bo, and many others. Lucile was preceded in death by her

Mother and Father and her Mother- and Father-in-Law, Minnie Lee and Carl Guess, Sr.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 29, 2007 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the

Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home at 705 N. Locust, Denton, Texas. The memorial service

will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1801 Malone, Denton,

Texas, at 4:00 pm, Saturday, June 28, 2007. Dedication of the grave will follow
