Obituary

Louise Burke Harris, 100, of Denton, died  peacefully Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital surrounded by family and friends.  Louise was born on July 6, 1918 in San Benito, Texas to Charles E. Burke and Tally Carter Burke.  She was blessed with two brothers, Charles E. Burke, Jr. and William C. Burke, Sr., who are both deceased.   June 28, 1953 Louise married Woodson Herbert Harris, who also preceded her in death May, 1993.

She completed a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Home Economics from the University of North Texas where she also worked over twenty years as an administrative assistant to Dean Imogene Dicky and Dean Frank Gafford. Joining the First Presbyterian Church of Denton in 1936, Louise was its oldest active member at the time of her death.  She served the church tirelessly throughout the years, all the while holding many positions of leadership, including ruling elder.   For her work in support of a variety of women's programs, she received the Presbyterian Women's Lifetime Membership Award in 1987.  Louise celebrated her 100 th birthday in 2018 and was honored with proclamations from Denton Mayor Watts and Texas Governor Abbott.

Louise is survived by her beloved daughter Mary Louise Harris, nephews, Robert W. Harris, wife Deborah, and Richard A. Harris, Jr., wife Joneel, all of Denton; nephews William C. Burke, wife Amanda, Phillip B. Burke, wife Kelly, both of Georgia, and Charles E. (Buddy) Burke, III, wife Wanda, of Tennessee; nieces Janis Speck of Florida and Shannon Scouten, husband Thomas, of San Antonio, Texas. In addition, she has many cherished family members in the DFW area, many of whom, like Louise, are descendants of A.M. Carter, retired Texas State Senator.

We extend our gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Daniel Caldwell, fourth floor medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, and caregivers, especially Teresa Perez, who provided extraordinary care, comfort and support to Louise.  Visitation will be Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 10 AM until 11:30 AM at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery (formerly Mulkey-Mason) Funeral Home, 705 N Locust Street, Denton, TX 76201.  The service will be held at 1 PM on the same day at First Presbyterian Church, 1114 W University Drive, Denton, TX 76201.  Burial will follow at the IOOF Cemetery, 711 S Carroll Blvd., Denton, TX 76201. Pallbearers will be: Rick Harris, Alec Harris, Dale Harris, Robert Harris, Jr., Cole Harris and David Storrie.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the First Presbyterian Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
