Bixler Griffith
April 2, 1919 – February 18, 2017
Louise Hazel Bixler Griffith, age 97, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2017 at Autumn Oaks in Corinth, Texas. She was born on April 2, 1919 in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Walter Glen and Ruth Harris Bixler. She spent most of her life in Alexandria, Virginia before moving to Corinth in 2006.
Louise graduated from Washington Lee High School in 1936 and attended Strayer Business College. On October 22, 1936, she married her beloved husband, Earle W. Griffith. She was employed by National Memorial Park, Acacia Life Insurance, U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1980.
She loved to travel and visited most of the 50 states as well as Israel, France, Scotland, England, Holland, Amsterdam, Mexico and Canada. Louise was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star, Martha Washington Chapter OES #42, in Alexandria, Virginia.
Louise was a devout Christian raised in Calvary United Methodist Church, Arlington, VA. In 1955 she and her family joined Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Alexandria. Her activities included the Women's Society, prayer groups, church choir, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and volunteering in the church and community. She could recite the names of all 66 books of the Bible by memory in less than one minute. In 2006, she joined Trinity United Methodist Church, Denton, Texas. She volunteered wherever she was needed and enjoyed being a member of the Prime Timers Group and Sunday School. She remained active folding bulletins every Friday for the Sunday service until December 2016.
She spent the last two and a half years of her life living at Autumn Oaks of Corinth, Assisted Living, where she enjoyed numerous activities and the camaraderie with other residents and the wonderful staff. She especially enjoyed monthly trips to the WinStar Casino in Oklahoma.
Her memories are cherished by her son, Wayne Griffith and wife Joy, her daughter, Ellie Leclaire and husband Doug; six grandchildren, Ron Griffith, Diane Boyd, Mike Griffith, Doug Griffith, Scott Royal and Michelle Clementson; three step grandchildren Ryan Northrop, Shelly Robinson and Greg Leclaire; 20 great grandchildren and her family and many friends.
Memorial services: February 26, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 633 Hobson Lane, Denton, TX 76205 at 1:30 p.m.
March 16, 2017 at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 2006 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria, VA 22307 at 11:00 a.m.
