Lina Briggs Kirkpatrick passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 in Denton, Texas, at the age of 88. She was born in Newton, Mississippi on December 14, 1925.
Lina received a Bachelors of Music degree, at North Texas State University, in 1946. She loved music and continued to study the piano, as well as the harpsichord, as an adult. Lina also sang. Along with her late husband, Hugh, she was a founding member of the Denton Bach Society. She and Hugh were also avid members of the choir at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, in Denton. Lina and Hugh traveled and lived extensively in the Middle East from 1952 until 1958. Hugh taught English for the State Department, and Lina taught music at the State Department's American International Schools. Once they settled down in Denton, Lina taught piano at home for over thirty years.
In August of 1947, Hugh and Lina spent their honeymoon in a little cabin outside of Allenspark Colorado, and in the 1970's they were finally able to purchase it. Since then, they have returned to that cabin, The Owl, almost every summer.
Hugh and Lina had four children: Hugh Charles Kirkpatrick, Paul Kirkpatrick, Tom Kirkpatrick and Alice Kirkpatrick Sims; three grandchildren: Gary Sims, Jr., Zoe Kirkpatrick and Hanna Kirkpatrick, and one great-grandchild: Hugh James Sims. Lina was preceded in death by her parents, her eldest son, Hugh Charles Kirkpatrick, and her husband, Hugh, who died just 41 days before her.
