Lily Mildred Hodges
Born in Aubrey, Texas on March 2, 1919, the daughter of Walter D. and Stella (Henderson) Hodges. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, W.O. "Ones" Hodges, former sheriff of Denton County; sister, Mary Hodges Lowther and brother-in-law, George Lowther.
She is survived by many cousins, including Sam and Reva McPherson of Yorktown, Virginia, Jim and Kay McPherson of Allen, Texas, Geneal Tibbetts and Larry Henderson of Denton, Margaret Osborn of Midland, Texas, Martha Len Nelson, Edith Perle Johnson, Mary Jo Hill and Lee Crawford.
Mildred had many close friends including Kathryn Griffin, Barbara and Hal Jackson, Rose Harpool, Gloria Schmitz, Donnie Holt, Farra Buckman, Ann Thompson, Margie Lynn Hall, and special friends, Glynn and Effie Creamer, Jose Corona and Pat Woodruff.
Mildred completed public schools in Aubrey, Texas. She received her college training at TWU in Denton with a Bachelors at age 19 and Masters degree in Music Education. Her first teaching assignment was in Graham, Texas. She taught in Denton at Lee Elementary, North Texas Laboratory School and Congress Junior High. In the summers, she taught in Boone, North Carolina. She gave private piano lessons to hundreds of students in the Denton Area. She was choir director at First Christian Church in Denton, and music director at the Aubrey Christian Church and Community Choir.
She belonged to the Ariel Club and numerous bridge clubs. She served on the National Christian Church Foundation Board, North Texas and TWU Advisory Boards. She had served as president of the Christian Women's Fellowship Sara Circle in Denton. She managed family farms in Aubrey and Navo, Texas. After retirement, She traveled widely in the United States, Europe and South America.
She will be fondly missed by her relatives, many students and friends.
Visitation will be at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust St., Denton from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday September 10, 2007.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday September 11, 2007 at Denton First Christian Church on Fulton at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Former choir members and students are urged to contact Mark Graham at Denton First Christian Church to sing in the choir.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Ann's Haven Hospice, Denton Public Library of charity of your choice.
