Lieutenant Lee Roy "Deacon" Robertson, Jr. (United States Navy, retired) died Thursday evening May 8, 2008, in Denton, Texas, while seated at his front porch, having just mowed the lawn. He had just returned in May from speaking for The Navigators, a Christian organization, at the University of South Carolina. He was in the midst of setting up further speaking engagements before going to Vietnam in July. He was also getting ready to publish a commentary on the book of Romans. He was called to the ministry in 1941 through the Baptist preacher, Dr. George W. Truett, and was ordained as a minister of the gospel in 1962. Rev. Robertson or "Pak Roy" ("Father Roy" in Indonesian) served The Navigators in Pasadena, CA and Dallas, TX and then for 38 years in Asia as their first missionary until 1986. He continued to serve in Training Evangelistic Leadership (TEL), Inc. until his death. After surviving Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Vega, Roy served as a flight instructor in WW II, flying all of the single-engine Navy planes, including the F-6 Hellcat. In the service, he was known as "Deacon", the unofficial chaplain for his squadron, having received his orders for Pearl Harbor the day after his call to ministry.
Roy was born April 21, 1921 in Dallas, TX to Lee Roy Robertson, Sr. and Jane (Gray) Robertson. He is survived by six children, Janet Lewis of Combine, Susan Rice of San Antonio, Keith Robertson of West Palm Beach, FL, Leonard Robertson of Fort Worth, Lila Van Horn of Denton, and Lee Randolph Robertson of Salatiga, Indonesia and their families, including eleven grandchildren; three nieces, one nephew, three grandnephews, two grandnieces, and one great grandniece. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to TEL, PO Box E, Denton TX 76202-1650; ( www.tel-intl.org ). He was preceded in death by a sister Evalyn Seymour, an infant brother, and wives Lois (Raws) in 1959 and Phyllis (Hapke) Robertson in 2007.
Viewing will be at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust St., Denton, TX 76201 from 4 PM to 6 PM on Sunday May 18, 2008. Funeral service will be 10 AM Monday, May 19, at Denton Bible Church (front chapel), 2300 E. University Dr., Denton, TX 76209 with Rev. Tom Nelson and Rev. Jim White, officiating. Military burial with honors will follow at 2 PM at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy., Dallas TX 76211. Thank you for your love and prayers.
