Juanita Taliaferro Cox passed away January 18, 2007. She had been a resident of Flower Mound, Texas since 1965. She was born in Denton, Texas on March 20, 1920 to Walter Vernice and Violet Lasley Taliaferro. She has one brother, Doyle, living in Denton and had one sister, Margaret (now deceased). Her father owned Denton Typewriter Exchange and his brothers were proprietors of hardware, grocery, and Singer Sewing Machine Stores on the Denton Courthouse Square.
Nita graduated from Denton High School where she met her future husband Melvin H. "Hal" Cox. She graduated from Texas State College for Women (Now Texas Woman's University) in 1939 with a teaching degree. In 1940, she and Hal were married. Hal attended North Texas Agricultural College in Denton, which was a part of Texas A & M University. Shortly after they married, Hal joined the Army Air Corp and, after receiving his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, was stationed at Ellington Field in Houston.
Nita's hobbies included painting and quilting. She was active in the Red Hat Club and a past member of The Women of Flower Mound as well as the Visual Art League. She was a member of the original cast of "Sweet Flower Mound Land," the historical musical in honor of the 1976 Bicentennial.
Nita was preceded in death by her husband, Hal, in 1992. Also preceding her in death in 2005 was her daughter, Nancy J. Davis, whose husband Forrest Davis now lives in Houston, Texas. She is survived by her other daughter, Cindy C. Spangler and her husband, Herbert B. Spangler, of Beaumont, Texas. Nita leaves five grandchildren: Herbert B. Spangler, Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Katy, TX; Jennifer A. Chirafis and her husband, Mike, of Lumberton, TX; Sarah J. Spangler of Austin, TX; Matthew H. Spangler of Beaumont, TX. and Seth A. Carlisle and his wife, Tonya, of Lewisville, Texas. She also leaves seven great Grandchildren: Gavin and Gillian Spangler of Katy, TX. and Michael and Lydia Chirafis of Lumberton, TX; Emilie Baker and Nathan Martinez of Lewisville, and Tristan Taylor of Corinth, Texas.
Graveside services will be Saturday, January 27th at 10:00 a.m. at the Flower Mound Presbyterian Church Cemetery with The Reverend Bruce Bradley officiating.
