Obituary

Rev. Joseph "Joe" Madison Funk, 95 of Denton, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Denton Rehabilitation Center. He was born August 11, 1914 in Seymour, TX to John Benjamin and Jettye Pearl (George) Funk.
He was married to Vernice Irick on November 7, 1935 in Denton. He was a graduate of Denton High School, attended UNT and SMU Perkins School of Theology. He was Ordained in 1950. During World War II, he worked for North American Aviation and taught Vocational School for GI's. He was a master cabinet maker and with his father, operated a Planning Mill on North Elm St., where he and his father made the hands on the Denton Court House Clock and did the mill work for the hardware drawers for Evers Hardware Store. He served as Scout Master for Kiwanis Club Troup #77, and served on the Scout Executive Committee for the Longhorn Council, BSA. He also drove a Span Bus, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and played the trumpet in the DHS, and UNT Bands, and the First Baptist Church Orchestras. He had served as a Methodist Minister for many years in this North Texas area.

A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Elm Ridge United Methodist Church 14632 Fish Trap Rd., east of Denton off of Hwy #1385. Rev. Richard Stark, and Rev. Bruce Hargrove will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton for visitation from 6-8 pm on Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Rev. Funk is survived by his wife of seventy-four years, Vernice Funk of Denton, daughter and son-in-law Melvena and Benny Noles of Aubrey, sons and daughters-in-law Jeff and Alice Funk of San Diego, CA, Fred and Dana Funk of Aubrey. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive him.
