John Lawhon III of Denton, Texas, departed the Earthly life on September 24, 2023. Born on December 14, 1934 in Denton, Texas, John lived his 88 years with love for his Lord.
He was an active member of First Church in Denton, Park Cities Baptist Church, and Southmont Baptist Church.
Attorney John Lawhon was a top-rated lawyer with decades of legal experience. He provided exceptional counsel and support to clients throughout Denton County and the surrounding areas of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex who had legal needs.
Among his legal credentials, Mr. Lawhon was Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law, Criminal Law, Child Welfare Law, and Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He delivered highly personalized representation to those he served, and he focused on protecting his clients' rights and interests.
He was elected to four terms as Denton County-District Attorney. Honored for his outstanding professionalism and service, Mr. Lawhon earned consistent top rankings and endorsements from his peers, and he holds a listing in Marquis Who's Who Top Lawyers. He has also been named in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in Finance and Business.
Mr. Lawhon served as General Counsel, University Attorney, and Secretary to the Board of Regents at Texas Woman's University for 37 years. Along with maintaining a successful legal practice, he served as President of the Denton County Bar Association; President of the Texas University Attorneys Association; President of the Denton Kiwanis Club; and President of the Denton Red Cross, and he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Texas District & County Attorneys Association. He was selected as a Super Lawyer in the state of Texas.
He was ranked in the top ten in Texas in tennis and was Conference Tennis Champion.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John Lawhon, Jr. and Dr. Gladys Lawhon, and his wife, Dr. Tommie Lawhon. He is survived by his son, David Collins Lawhon of Dallas.
A private family burial was held at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Denton, Texas.
