IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Michael
Flewharty
November 11, 1933 – April 5, 2024
John Michael Flewharty went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday April 5, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born in Sherman Texas on November 11, 1933 to parents Wilton Baker Flewharty and Ozella Dickerson Flewharty.
He started school in Denison, moved to Seymour in 7th grade and graduated from Seymour High School in 1953, as part of the first graduating class. He then attended Texas Tech University until 1956 as an Industrial Engineering major and was a charter member of the Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity. He was drafted into the US Navy in 1956, attended NavCad training in Pensacola, Florida and was honorably discharged in 1958.
He married Dorothy Sharon Millican in Lucedale, Mississippi on April 13, 1957 and they lived in Pensacola, Florida then settled in Lubbock. He had a very successful career as a Construction Superintendent building homes and commercial buildings starting in Lubbock, Greenville, Salt Lake City, Denver, back to Lubbock, then to Denton.
He loved the outdoors from a young age and carried that on throughout his life. He retired in Denton, to continue with his love for bass fishing, as well as arts and crafts. John was an active member of the Texas Gourd Society, held leadership positions and won many awards for his craftsmanship. Next, he began carving small people and animal figures, taking great pride in doing carvings for friends and special occasions.
John was a devout Christian who truly loved the Lord. He was a member of Denton Bible Church, participated in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and other bible study groups. He supported Sharon in every aspect of her life and her ministries at the church. He was a friend to everyone, was always willing to use his wisdom and skills to provide guidance, even fix a flat tire for a stranger. John and Sharon's garage door was always open for friends and neighbors. He took to heart teachings from the Good Samaritan parable and embodied the true spirit of one who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Sharon Flewharty, sister Susan Flewharty, daughter Karen Flewharty and Nancy Brown, son Jay Flewharty and wife Ivanna, 2 granddaughters Krystal Ladd and Brittany Rice, 3 great grandchildren, one niece Stefani Edwards and her three children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William Dan Flewharty.
His sense of humor and endearing personality will be missed by all those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Samaritan's Purse in honor of John Flewharty.
