Duffy, John Joseph - DENTON – John J. Duffy, 77, was born June 1, 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After a 19-month hard fought battle with Metastatic Melanoma, he went to his eternal rest on April 2, 2012. Funeral Mass will be 1:00pm Tuesday, April 10, at St. Mark Catholic Church, Denton, Texas. A gathering with the family will follow immediately after at Southmont Baptist Church. John was the youngest of five sons born to William & Elizabeth Mae (Bayless) Duffy. He was a 1952 graduate of Bishop McGuinness H.S. in OKC and received a B.S. in Geology from the University of Oklahoma in 1958. John was a loyal and dedicated Sooner his entire life. One of his favorite pastimes was attending OU football games with Sue every season. John served with the U.S. Army Reserve during the Berlin-Cuban Missile Crisis. While stationed at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, he met his wife of 49 years, Sue (Gragg) Duffy. They were married October 20, 1962 in Poteau, Oklahoma. His career in Agricultural Minerals Marketing took his family to six states. He also received a Professional Masters Degree from Harvard Business School in 1982. In addition, John served as a Past Chairman of the Southwest Fertilizer Conference. In 1999, he retired as Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing with Mississippi Chemical Corporation and relocated with Sue to Denton at that time. John was an active member of his community through the Denton South Rotary Club where he chaired the chapter's Annual 4-Way Speech Contest, which provides scholarships to area high school students. He also served with the Denton County Tax Appraisal Board and was an active parishioner with St. Mark Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Francis, James, Victor and Bernard. In addition to his wife, Sue, John is also survived by two daughters, Shauna Hartman and husband, Steve of Plano, TX; Kristy Schmidt and husband Kelly of Tampa, FL as well as two grandchildren: Braden Duffy Hartman and Isabella Rhylee Schmidt. He also leaves a host of extended family and lifelong friends.
