Jock Brian Sutherland, known to everyone as Brian, was born March 18, 1959, in Columbia, Mississippi, and died on December 31, 2025, at Corinth Rehab. He was 66 years old.
Brian was a loving dad and a friend to everyone. He had a lust for conversation and connection, a mischievous sense of humor, and a laugh that could light up a room. He was a proud Aggie from Texas A&M University, Class of 1982, and never missed an opportunity to say “Gig ’Em.”
Brian is survived by his wife, Kelly Stribling Sutherland; his son, Robert Sutherland, and wife Paola Lievano Pulido; and his daughter, Amanda Sutherland. He is also survived by his siblings: John Sutherland; Barbara Harris (Thomas) and family; Charles Sutherland (Debbie) and family; Mary Sutherland; and his sister-in-law Denise Sutherland, along with many nieces, nephews, and their children. He was preceded in death by his cherished brother Thomas Sutherland, and his beloved parents, Ruth Pirie Sutherland and Charles Eugene Sutherland.
Professionally, Brian built a long career in the healthcare industry, working as an account executive for Maxicare, New York Life, Aetna, Blue Cross, and Higginbotham. He was known for serving his clients with creativity, integrity, and care. Later in life, he worked part-time at Home Depot and Lowe’s, where he enjoyed staying active and connecting with people.
Brian had a deep appreciation for good food and was a talented home cook, known especially for his soups, gumbo, poached eggs, and tri-tip steak. He loved gardening and took great pride in his beautiful yard and fountains, where you might often find him blowing leaves or relaxing on his bench swing. In retirement, he developed a love for pickleball and water aerobics and was still known to play a mean game of racquetball.
Throughout his life, Brian was deeply involved in service and community. He served as an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 366 and shared many memorable camping adventures with his son Robert, including Northern Tier, Florida Sea Base, and numerous outings across Texas. He was also an active volunteer with the USNA Parents Club of North Texas—where he was famous for preparing the very best coffee bars—as well as with Kiwanis. His faith and friendships were nurtured through Coffee Club, Trinity Sunday School classes, and Denton Bible classes, all of which were meaningful parts of his life.
Brian was immensely proud of his children and spoke often with admiration about Amanda’s academic and professional accomplishments and about Robert, a Naval Officer and graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He spoke fondly of all his nieces and nephews and their children—he loved them all.
Brian also had a special place in his heart for his dogs, whom he walked every Saturday at the Denton Community Market. Before his passing, he made sure each of his dogs was placed in a loving home.
Brian fought a brave battle with pancreatic cancer and did so with great strength, resilience, a little sass, and a lot of grace. He was lovingly cared for by his wife, his children, and his devoted family of brothers and sisters.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Please join us for his memorial service on January 12th at 1:00 PM at Denton Bible Church. A reception will immediately follow and all are welcome to attend.
