Jewell Joseph Mathis, Jr., 101, of Denton, died Sunday February 6, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.
Mr. Mathis was born on December 8, 1909 in Mineral Wells, TX to Jewell Joseph and Alma (Granstaff) Mathis. He worked for Gulf Oil Corporation in Houston as Senior Auditor until his retirement in 1964, when he moved to Granbury, TX, where he lived until 1993. He is preceded in death by wives Lois Denman Mathis and Ann Mathis. He was married to Laura Frances (Tuttle) Davis on October 8, 1983 in Dallas, TX. He graduated from Graford High School, Weatherford College and the University of Texas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Denton. He served on the Board of Trustees of Baylor University for six years from 1968 to 1974.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday February 10, 2011 at Good Samaritan Retirement Village, 2500 Hinkle, Denton, TX. A graveside service for family will be held at 12:00 Noon Friday February 11, 2011 at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Frances Mathis of Denton; son, Joel H. Mathis and his wife Ellen Mathis of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren.
