Jerry met his first wife, Maxine Maxwell, at Tyler Junior College, and they married on July 14, 1953. Early in their marriage, they traveled extensively due to Jerry's work as a surveyor for the USGS, which brought them to many different places and allowed them to experience a variety of interesting and memorable adventures. When their children reached school age, the family settled in Dallas, where Jerry changed careers and began managing a local drug store.
In 1965, Jerry moved back to Grand Saline to care for his father, who was diagnosed with brain cancer. While there, he worked at the Morton Salt mine before returning to Tyler, where he worked for Central Ohio Breeding Association. Later, he moved to Ponder to manage Southwest AI. After Maxine's passing in 1977, Jerry met and married Brenda Jennings Markham. Together, they made their home in Denton, where Jerry resumed working for Central Ohio Breeding Association until his retirement.
Jerry had a lifelong love of music. He grew up singing in the Savage family trio with his sisters, he participated in the TJC band as a tuba player, and was involved in quartets and choirs wherever he lived. His passion for music extended into his church life, where he regularly shared his talents as a tenor soloist. Whether performing at special church services or singing with friends and family, music was Jerry's way of expressing his faith and joy. His warm voice and love of song will be remembered by all who had the privilege of hearing him sing.
Another great passion of Jerry's was gardening. He had a natural green thumb and enjoyed cultivating plants and flowers. Whether he was carefully propagating a new plant or tending to his beloved garden, Jerry found peace and satisfaction in watching things grow. His garden was not just a collection of plants—it was a reflection of his nurturing spirit and his desire to bring beauty into the world. Friends and family often enjoyed visiting him and Brenda's home to admire the fruits of his labor.
Jerry was a faithful member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Denton, and also attended Singing Oaks Church of Christ with Brenda.
