Obituary

JANE ADELE MOTT, Ph. D

Jane Adele Mott was born in Fresno, California August 28, 1919 and died in Denton, Texas January 27, 2018.

She was a Life Member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Raisina-Fresno Chapter No. 89/555 and an active member of AAUW.

Jane Mott received her B.A. degree with high honors from Fresno State College (1941); M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1944); and earned her Ph. D degree from the University of Southern California (1954).

Dr. Mott's career began as a physical education teacher in a California high school but soon moved to positions at the university and college level including the University of Nebraska, the University of California at Los Angeles, and San Jose State College.  Immediately prior to joining the Texas Woman's University faculty she served as Professor and Director of Physical Education for the latter half of her 20 year tenure at Smith College, North Hampton, MA.

At Texas Woman's University, Dr. Mott held a series of key posts – she was Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Interim Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; and at the time of retirement, Chair of the Department of Dance.  She undertook all duties related to these posts with integrity and assiduity.  In addition to her fine attention to detail and measured approach to decision-making, Jane's dry sense of humor was always in evidence.  In recognition of her excellent contributions to TWU she was named Cornaro Professor in 1988, the highest award bestowed on the faculty by the University.

Among numerous professional activities in Dr. Mott's career were the Presidency of the Eastern Association for Physical Education of College Women, Vice Presidency of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, and President of the Eastern Association of Physical Education of College Women.  Dr. Mott authored two books and the Measurement and Evaluation section in over forty of the Physical Education Activities Series text books published by the William C. Brown Company.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents: Edwin Leland Mott, M. D. and Margaret Derby Mott, and by her companion of sixty years, Dr. Aileene Simpson Lockhart.

There are no surviving immediate family members, but in their place are her dear friends and the family of Aileene S. Lockhart: Aileene L. Stark, Mary Lou L. Workman (Ron), Lyn L. Gray, Betty L. McLeod (John), John Lockhart (Martha) and Tom Lockhart.  She will also be greatly missed by her Scottish friends – Dr. Phyllis Early (on whose Doctoral Committee she served at TWU), Dr. Valerie Hallam, and Miss Rosemary Stewart.

The family wishes to thank her loving caregivers Melanie Walton, Diane Jervis, Diana Pyke, Kind Companions, and VNA Ann's Haven.
