James Kent Anderson, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 90.
Born on April 7, 1936, in Bakersfield, CA, Jim grew up in Oildale, CA, where he was a high school letterman in swimming before beginning work in the oil fields and on the railroad after graduation. In August 1958, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 20 years, retiring honorably as a Petty Officer First Class and chief radioman.
During his military career, Jim was stationed throughout the world, including Maryland, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Greece, and Alameda, California. While serving in the Navy, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Xezonatos Anderson, beginning a marriage that would span more than 59 years.
After retiring from the Navy, Jim and Dorothy made Denton, Texas their home. Using the GI Bill, Jim attended North Texas State University, earning both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, graduating magna cum laude. After graduation and earning his teaching certificate, Jim was hired to teach industrial arts at Strickland Junior High School. His strong work ethic and sharp mind carried into a long career serving Denton County, where he worked in operations management before later serving as a literacy instructor and liaison within the county jail system. Retiring at 81 years old, Jim’s sense of purpose, dedication and service to others never faded.
Jim was known for his intelligence, quick wit, and steady kindness. He never met a problem he couldn’t solve or a person he wasn’t willing to help. Whether repairing a neighbor’s bike, mowing a widow’s lawn, creating or restoring woodworking projects, or working on cars, Jim quietly made life better for those around him. He loved boating, fishing, hunting, playing gin and dominoes, and spending time with family during the holidays and watching football games.
A devoted Christian, Jim lived his life grounded in faith, compassion, humility, and service. He was active in his community, including serving as president of the Denton High Noon Lions Club, and was admired for both his leadership and generous spirit.
Above all, Jim was a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy X Anderson; his daughter, Rebecca Savage; his son, Steven Anderson and daughter-in-law Rayne Anderson; and his cherished grandchildren, Hannah Savage, Thomas Savage, and Sadie Anderson.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Alfhild Anderson, and his brothers, Eugene and David Anderson.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, unwavering integrity, faithful service, and deep love for his family. Those who knew him will remember his gentle humor, thoughtful heart, and the countless ways he showed up for others. His life was a true testament to kindness, character, service and a life well lived.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, May 18, 2026 in the chapel of Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton. The graveside service will be at 10:15 AM Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX.
