Obituary

Memorial services for James Warren Althaus will be held at 11 am, Saturday, September 9, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4700 Nash Drive, The Colony.

Born in Austin, to Leila Elizabeth and John William August Althaus, James was raised in Temple, Texas. He completed college at the University of North Texas, with a degree in secondary education and focus in theater. He worked for newspapers and taught for several years, before his artistic background aided in the creation of a commercial photography studio.

Moving to The Colony, Texas, in 1978, he became deeply involved in the community as a volunteer. He was selected Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1986 and was inducted into the city's Hall of Fame for his lifetime achievements in 2004.

An American Red Cross Instructor for more than 20 years, James taught lifeguarding, swim classes, first aid and CPR. He took his volunteer work to a professional level, managing aquatics for the City of Lewisville for the final years of his working career. The Lewisville Lightening Swim Team has a Special Olympics Swim Meet named in his honor for his assistance in their activities.

He received the Golden Oak Leaf, highest local council award, from the Cross Timbers Girl Scouts. An official lifetime member of the Girl Scouts for 25 years, he guided canoe trips for children from across a five-county area.

As the longest continuing member of a Board of Directors for the City of The Colony, he represented the city's Public Library for more than 24 years, and saw the development of many projects, including two facility openings. He was recognized by the North Texas Library System for his assistance in a major restructuring of its association with the '99 Government Official of the Year Award.

He was instrumental in the early germination of theater in his community. During the '80s, while actually taking hemo-dialysis kidney treatments in his living room, he held committee meetings to select scripts and plan local shows. Theatrically, he might be best known for his repeat role as "the Villain" in annual Sail Fair melodrama shows.

A member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in The Colony, he witnessed the growth of a small church from a portable building into a modest facility, and later assisted in its larger building development as a church elder & Sunday school teacher.
