Obituary

Horace Self, 83, of Lakewood Village, TX, passed away August 7, 2020, peacefully at home, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Horace was born November 6, 1937 in Madill, Oklahoma. He graduated from Madill Senior High School on    May 28,1956. He was honorably discharged, after serving from 1961 to 1967, as a Staff Sergeant, 136th Combat Support Squadron, from the Air National Guard and The Reserve of the United States Air Force. Horace married Norma Lee Chittum on May 31,1958. He retired from Continental Emsco/LTV Energy as a printing manager after over 30 years. Horace enjoyed sports. He was on a bowling league for several years and loved playing golf. He spent many years coaching, watching and refereeing soccer games. He also loved the Oklahoma Sooners.

Horace accomplished many great achievements in his life but family was always his first priority. Horace and Norma raised their two daughters in Dallas, Texas. He was a patient and loving husband, father and grandfather. During Norma's lengthy illness, Horace sacrificed himself around the clock to take care of her. His family hoped he would somehow have a chance to have some fun again. Several months after Norma passed away, he reconnected with his friend since 5th grade, Beverly Stedman. Beverly made the last year of his life full of love and happiness.

His life was an incredible reflection of the love of God. Horace's easy going personality, friendly smile, loving and gentle spirit was known to all that met or knew him. He was truly loved by all and will be missed beyond words.

Horace was preceded in death by his parents Virgil Self and Edith Self (Reid), his brothers Virgil Self Jr. and Elmo Self, and his wife of 60 years, Norma Lee Self.

Horace is survived by his fiancé, Beverly Stedman, daughters Denise Jackson (Bryan) and Shannon Temple (Charles), honorary daughter Pam Curley (Don), grandchildren Taylor Jackson (Rachel), Bailey Hedrick (Glenn), Landrey Jackson and Mia Temple, great grandchildren Annabelle Laverde, Bentley Hedrick, Greyson Hedrick and Jace Hedrick, sister Carrie Frank (Tom) and brother Bill Self (Anita). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Horace and Norma moved from Dallas to Lakewood Village in 2000. They were members of the Living Word Baptist Church in Little Elm. They were blessed to have the most wonderful neighbors and friends. Special thanks to the entire Farage family for all of your amazing love and support. Also a special thanks to Tom and Penny, Bernie, Dennis and Linda and Fernando for always lending a helping hand and friendship. Horace loved getting his 4pm "Whoop" text from Tom.

Special thanks to Mercy Hospice for their great care they provided to Horace.
