Herman Lee Smith, age 89, of Pilot Point, passed away on August 13, 2015 at The Vintage in Denton. He was born June 17, 1926 in Argyle, Texas to Oscar Lee Smith and Mary Catherine (McClary) Smith. He was the youngest of 6 children. At 18, while still in school, he was drafted into the Army. He served in World War II in the Philippines and then was assigned to the Military Police and sent to Japan. After the war, he met the love of his life, Cleo Mavis Hickman on a blind date. They fell in love and married June 13, 1948 in Tioga, Texas. Together they had 3 children, Don, Debbie, and Cyndi. Cleo died on June 17, 1994. He then married Maxine Coy on February 16, 1996; she died October 2, 2008. During his life he worked on ranches, a dairy farm, driving a truck, Temco Aircraft, as a security guard at Tetra Pak, and retired from Moore Business Forms in Denton. He taught Sunday School, drove the church bus, lead music, and was a member at Bethel Baptist Church in Pilot Point where he was an Associate Pastor.
He is survived by 1 son, Don Smith and wife Wanda of Aubrey; 2 daughters, Debbie Smith of Pilot Point, and Cyndi Coley and husband Jesse of Hickory Creek; grandchildren Sheila Rodriquez, Debbie Wry Richards, Sandra Bishop, Sonny McLain, Misty McLain, James Coley, 10 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers/sisters-in-law, and step children, Lanette Hendrix, Deanna Carter, and Vernon Coy. He is preceded in death by his parents, wives, brothers Elmo and Eugene, and sisters Mildred Wilmoth, Aileen Anderson, and Thelma Willingham.
Herman was a great friend to all that knew him. He was a great dad, papa, and great grandpa. His greatest joys in life were his family and serving the Lord. He will be missed.
Visitation will start at 10 am and services will follow at 11 am Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton. Thank you to all the folks at The Vintage, the dialysis center, and Hospice Plus that were so kind and helped with our dad at the end.
