Herbert Lee McCurley, 88, of Denton passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023. He was born March 31, 1935 in Lake Dallas, TX to Fred McCurley and Reta Alexander McCurley Davis. He was married to Claudine Mabry on June 25, 1955 in Denton. They were married 68 years.
He is survived by: wife Claudine, son Vince McCurley and daughter Lori Barthold all of Denton; daughter Zelda Loyd & husband Paul Sr. of Ponder; grandsons Preston Barthold and Avery Barthold both of Denton, Paul Loyd Jr. & wife Brandy of Justin, Christopher Loyd of Ponder, 3 great grandchildren; brothers James McCurley & wife Patsy of Corinth, Joe Davis & wife Vicki of Kaufman, Freddie McCurley of Rockwall, Roger McCurley of Arizona; sisters Gail Opanowitz of Alabama, Kristi Nelson of Washington, Sharon Schumaker of Waco. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, step-father Robert Davis, sister Betty Brown and infant daughter Sandra McCurley.
Visitation will be Friday, December 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home in Denton, TX. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 2 at 2:30 PM at Highland Baptist Church in Denton, TX. Burial will be at Trinity Cemetery in Denton, TX following the service.
Herb was a man of many talents and interests. He worked for Braniff Airlines, Denton County Sheriff's Office and Denton Police Department. The one he was most proud of and built from the ground up with his family was Herb's Body Shop and Wrecker Service. He was well-known for his painting and repair skills for any vehicle on wheels and a few with wings. For the wrecker service, he was highly-respected and known by many for his fairness, generosity and for treating customers like family and their vehicles as if they were his own.
