Helene Rooney, 81, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on
at home in The Colony, Texas.
The only child of Betty and Joe Toolen, Helene was born Jan. 20, 1928 in McKeesport, PA; grew up in New Jersey; and met the love of her life, Gerald "Jerry" Rooney, when she was 15 years old. The two were engaged during her senior prom and wed immediately after high school, beginning a successful 63-year marriage.
Along with her faith, family was the center of Helene's life and she is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Rooney; their two daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Warren Hoover and Kay and Bob Belletiere; and four grand-daughters and their husbands Kara and Pete Winton, Kelly Bauder and Kevin Short, Shannon and Matt Huber and Brittany and Chris Hyatt. Helene was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Adam and Amber Winton; Spencer and Celia Short; Kylie, MacKenzie and Preston Huber; and Brenna Hyatt. Helene was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Michael, who died at birth.
Helene and Jerry raised their daughters in New Jersey, and Helene initially was a stay-at-home mother. She went to work in the school system when her daughters started school. She worked in the cafeteria at Dayton Elementary School and in the library at South Brunswick High School.
Helene and Jerry relocated to The Colony in 1979 when Jerry's employer, Boy Scouts of America, moved its headquarters to Irving, Texas. Jerry served the company 44 years before retiring in 1990, and Helene worked for the Boy Scouts for a number of years as well. Combining a lifelong love of books and reading, Helene also worked in The Colony Library. In retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling, volunteering in the community and spending time with family. Helene also was an active member of the Christ Community Church in The Colony.
